Bernard V. Gertler is a psychologist and organizational consultant in
private practice. As Co-Director of the William Alanson White Organization
Program, he teaches a variety of courses on organizational development, group
and organizational dynamics, and role effectiveness. He has taught similar
courses as Adjunct Associate Professor in the MBA Program at Manhattan
College. He is also Lecturer in Psychiatry and Religion at Union
Theological Seminary. As a senior member and Past President of the New
York Center of the A. K. Rice Institute, Dr. Gertler consults in and directs
group relations conferences, both nationally and internationally
As a consultant, Dr. Gertler works with organizations and institutions on
issues related to leadership and management development, the relatedness of
organizational structure and task, and team effectiveness. Examples of
past work include executive coaching, retreat design, conflict resolution,
critical incident management, long-term planning, and mission and vision
development with Boards of Directors. Clients include large corporations
such as Merck and Cigna, law firms, medical and religious institutions,
professional associations, and not-for-profit social and educational
organizations.
Dr. Gertler’s expertise in group relations combined with his interests in
organizational development and change management is reflected in his consulting
and writing on the influence of group and organizational dynamics on
productivity, efficiency, adjustment and satisfaction in the workplace.
Through understanding the impact of how processes outside of awareness affect
authority, individual role effectiveness, and team performance, he assists
organizations in understanding the relationship between organizational process,
structure and task.
A licensed psychologist in the state of New York, Dr. Gertler maintains a
private practice of organizational consultation, executive coaching, and
psychotherapy.
Dr. Gertler earned his Bachelor's degree in English from UCLA and his Ph.D.
in Clinical Psychology from the City University of New York. He is
certified as a psychoanalyst from the William Alanson White Institute. Dr.
Gertler holds a Qualification in Advanced Organisational Consultation from the
Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, London, and is also a member of the
Advanced Organisational Consultation Society of the Tavistock. He is a
member of the American Psychological Association, the International Society for
the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations, and the William Alanson White
Psychoanalytic Society. He is a Fellow of the A. K. Rice Institute.
